Background
Working as a team with the Riley Hospital staff, Leonardo Group Americas helped design the Interventional Procedure Center that merged Perioperative Services, Cath Lab, and Interventional Radiology Departments.
Riley Hospital for Children has one of the most prestigious surgery programs in the United States. Spearheaded by the Perioperative Services department, the hospital embarked on an innovative design for their new department to include the Interventional Radiology and Cath Lab departments.
Prior to this project, the operating rooms did not have a formal case cart picking system, and the majority of the work to assemble surgery supplies was done by circulating nurses. In addition, due to the long distance to the Pharmacy, medication deliveries were slow, and support was not immediate.
The Challenge
Riley engaged Leonardo Group Americas to partner in the design of the Simon Family Tower, using Lean principles and tools. Many stakeholders (Surgeons, Cardiologists, Interventional Radiologists, Pharmacists Nurses, and Techs) were interested in a successful outcome, as it was important to “get it right” the first time.
Leonardo Solution
Using the tools of Flow Process Design, every aspect of the Simon Family Tower was designed in concert with the clinical staff. Solutions were developed for Patient Flow, Material Flow, and Equipment Flow.
The Simon Family Tower is complete, and now houses the Riley clinical staff as they deliver world-class care to their patients and their families. Sixteen procedure suites were designed and built, including a state-of-the-art hybrid Cath Lab and Cardiac Surgery suite. The new Satellite Pharmacy delivers medications to the procedure rooms in a fraction of the time it used to take.
The new equipment locations allow for much quicker room setups. The new Sterile Processing department picks and delivers case carts with precision. Staff satisfaction continues to improve and families enjoy a much more welcoming environment.
